Leroy is one of Burgundy’s most discussed estates. Since 1992, Mme Lalou Bize-Leroy has concentrated her efforts on three principal activities; the negociant Business Leroy S.A., Domaine Leroy which is wholly owned by Leroy S.A. and her personal estate, Domaine d’Auvenay.
From the elegant house in Auxey, she distributes what many regard as Burgundy’s finest wines. Lalou Bize feels that the greatest impact to her wines are from the vineyards and for more than 20 years, she has pushed the boundaries of viticulture more than any person would. Famously, her vines are cultivated biodynamically; restoring the vine’s equilibrium with their environment and giving the vines its force to better resistance to diseases as well as producing more anthocyanins. Resulting in better aromatic and lower yields. All this involves a huge amount of labour and the Domaine employs 30 full time working to care of the vineyards. Low yields bring natural concentration to the wines.
Young Leroy reds are deeply coloured and impressively intense. In recent years, you can detect a more gentle approach to the extraction of tannin whilst retaining a depth and ripeness of fruit flavour that few Burgundies achieve.
